Candy is owned by Liisa Kay and was leased to us for our first litter.

We are incredibly grateful to Candy’s owner for allowing her to travel from Queensland to Sydney to be the dam of our foundation litter. Candy’s lines complemented Belmont’s beautifully, making the pairing a very natural fit.

Candy’s sweet nature was clearly passed on to her babies. She is a highly social Xolo, and those wonderful traits have absolutely shown through in her puppies.

As a maiden bitch, Candy gave birth to nine beautiful puppies. She did everything right, cleaning her babies, tidying up after them, and doing her very best to nourish them. Unfortunately, she only had milk in two nipples, so we needed to step in and assist.

Candy was an incredibly protective mother, which sounds ideal, and in many ways it was, but as the puppies grew, this did make socialisation and exposure more challenging.

Because of the milk issue, the puppies were weaned early, and by around four to five weeks, Candy began to naturally create some space between herself and the litter (which is entirely understandable; those sharp little teeth are no joke).

While the ideal is for puppies to remain with their mother until eight weeks of age, the reality is that many mums are well and truly ready to be done by that stage and no longer wish to spend much time with their babies.

Stepping in to finish the job were the puppies’ father and their aunty, who did an outstanding job playing with them and teaching them valuable lessons. The role of aunties within a litter is hugely important and often underestimated.

With the support of these “step-in” parents, we were able to provide daily socialisation with visitors, something Candy simply wouldn’t have allowed - ensuring the puppies still received the exposure they needed during this critical stage.

Candy has undergone comprehensive health testing, including:

Hip and elbow scoring
Eye examination and certification
Cardiac examination and certification
Embark Vet DNA genetic disease screening - DM carrier
Thyroid Test - clear
Full blood panel
Professional temperament assessment

Breeding

There are no plans for another litter from Candy at this time.
