The Xolo

Primitive breeds such as the Xoloitzcuintle are simply those dogs who still behave and react according to their ancestral nature because it has not been significantly diminished over time. To successfully train and live with an ancient breed, you must understand and respect their motivations.

The Xolo is a very intelligent breed, they are very trainable but that does not mean they are biddable.

The Xolo is an independent thinker, they often have to know what is in it for them and will use their intelligence to benefit to them, whereas a more biddable breed like a working breed will often do as you ask just because you asked.

The Xolo is often referred to as pushy and manipulative, and they certainly can be, but that doesn’t mean they all are but it’s certainly something you need to keep in the back of your mind.

You must be firm and consistent with a Xolo. To be firm does not mean physically harsh; it simply means what you say goes, and there are consequences, no different to a healthy parent-child relationship.

If you want to baby a dog, this is not the breed for you. Whilst you can give them plenty of love and attention, it should be on your terms, not when they demand it.

A Xolo will feel safest and be the best companion when they have a firm, fair & assertive leader/parent.
